Starting this Spring, we will be offering a new test to screen for heartworm and tick-borne diseases in dogs.
Although we have recommended annual heartworm testing for years, screening for tick-borne diseases is not
something that was considered important in the past — but things are changing. Dr. Michael Dryden is a
nationally-recognized veterinary parasitology expert. He has been instrumental in spreading the word to fellow
veterinarians regarding the importance of effective flea and tick control and the diseases that these parasites carry.
For reasons not fully understood — although likely related to increasing deer populations and climate change
— tick populations are increasing throughout the U.S. With this increase in ticks comes an increase in the
diseases they carry. The most well-known of these diseases is Lyme Disease, which has been recognized in
both canines and humans. While often vague, symptoms in dogs can include lethargy, fever, and joint pain.
Other tick-borne infections of dogs include Anaplasmosis and Ehrlichiosis.
Because of the increasing occurrence and potential serious nature of these diseases, routine screening is
being recommended by experts in the veterinary field. A new low-cost test is available, so we are recommending
the enhanced screening test for all of our canine patients who would otherwise just be screened for heartworm
infection. When caught early, these diseases are curable.
Our doctors would be happy to explain the test and the importance of these diseases further. Feel free to
ask at your next visit!
